Peace Walk for Brandon Weds 5/20
Tue, May. 18, 2010
This Wednesday, SilenceIsViolence will join the Social Aid and Pleasure Club Task Force to remember musician Brandon Franklin with a Peace Walk. Brandon--a gifted performer, educator, and contributor to traditional New Orleans culture--was killed last Sunday night during a dispute in a friend's home. He was only 22 years old, but already a major presence in the lives of those who enjoyed his music through the TBC Brass Band, and those students at O. Perry Walker who were touched by his generous spirit as a teacher.
The walk will be led by the V.I.P. Ladies and Kids and New Orleans Bayou Steppers social aid and pleasure clubs, along with Brandon's band members, family, and students. The Second and Third Districts of the New Orleans Police Department will also participate, in a show of solidarity with the community.
We invite all who feel the loss of our young people as acutely as we do to join us in this season-end Peace Walk. It is especially difficult when we find ourselves marking a new loss from the cultural community during one of these walks. We at least hope that Brandon's violent death will summon the attention of our new city leaders to the cultural impact of the violence in our city--and the potential for culture-based responses and creative solutions. The Peace Walks will resume in the fall in Brandon's memory, with a renewed dedication to resisting the culture of violence by tapping the cultures of hope, and spreading a message of peace through talented voices such as the one we have lost in Brandon.
